Padmabhushan Mahakavi Gopal Das Neeraj dies after prolonged illness

Poet Gopaldas Neeraj died late in the evening after a long illness. Son Shashank Prabhakar said that after initial treatment in Agra, he was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi yesterday but he could not be saved even after the doctors’ relentless efforts. He said that his body will be first kept in Agra for the last darshan of the people and after that the body will be taken to Aligarh where his funeral will be done.

Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’ was born on January 04, 1925 in Purvari village of Etawah district. At the age of 6, his father Babu Brijkishore Saxena passed away. He passed the High School Examination in 1st class from Eta in 1942. At the beginning of Etawah’s work, Typist worked for some time, after that he worked as a typist or clerk at various places in Delhi. After taking private examinations with a job, graduated in 1959 in Intermediate, 1951 and first class in 1953 from Hindi literature.

He also did some teaching work at the Meerut’s famous Meerut College for some time as a practitioner of Hindi. After that he was appointed a lecturer of the Hindi Department at Aligarh’s Dharma Samaj College and started living in permanent housing. Meanwhile, the popularity of his poetic genius reached Mumbai. He invited him to write the song as a songwriter, which he gladly accepted. He worked for years writing songs in films. The songs of many popular films like Mera Naam Joker, Sharmili and Prem Pujari became extremely popular.

Some songs written in them, such as Karvaan Guzar Gaya, Dekhte Hi raho, Ae Bhai Jra Dekh ke Chalo. But he did not take much interest in filming and he returned to the hometown again.

Neeraj received popularity as a lyricist of Hindi cinema more than poetry writing. He received many honors for his writings. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007. The Uttar Pradesh government also honored him with Yash Bharti Soman. Neeraj also received three Filmfare Awards.
